Overview The Department of Chemistry at Oklahoma State University (OSU) invites applications for the position of Department Chair. The position will be at the rank of Full Professor with tenure. The University seeks an experienced, dynamic leader with a strong commitment to teaching and research. The Chair serves as the chief spokesperson and advocate for the Department of Chemistry both within and outside of the University. About Oklahoma State University Established in 1890, Oklahoma State University is a modern land-grant system of interdisciplinary programs that prepare students for success in the 21st century. OSU serves approximately 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students across its five-campus system, with more than 22,500 on the Stillwater campus. Through its ten colleges, over 1,600 faculty, members educate students from all 77 counties in Oklahoma, from all 50 states, and 120 nations. The faculty of OSU exceed $125 million annually in research expenditures. About the Department of Chemistry The Department of Chemistry has seen substantial investment over the last decade. With 13 recent hires, it has grown to 21 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 5 non-tenure track faculty. The Department has been successful at diversifying the faculty and student body. For example, it has one of the highest faculty females - to - male ratios among R1 programs. Chemistry is responsible for teaching approximately 6,000 students per year including 170 undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry majors and 70 graduate students. Faculty successfully compete for state, federal, and private research funding with current funding exceeding $3.8 M annually. Accolades include several CAREER awardees, ACS Fellows, a PECASE Presidential fellow, fellows of the National Academy of Inventors, Oklahoma Chemist Awardees, Medal of Excellence for Teaching and Research Awardees, among others. The department is housed in three adjacent buildings that also include several specialty laboratories, one of which is the State-wide NMR facility where a new 800 MHz and an upgraded 600 MHz NMR spectrometers are currently being installed. The Position of Department Chair Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department Chair of Chemistry is the chief academic, administrative, and budgetary officer as well as the primary spokesperson for the Department. The Department Chair should provide collaborative leadership for the faculty and programs, as well as visionary and innovative direction for the faculty, staff, and students. The Department Chair will be responsible for providing leadership by defining the Department's strategic priorities for recruiting, mentoring, and retaining a diverse and highly qualified faculty and student body, and for the continued growth of the Department across its undergraduate and graduate programs. Specific responsibilities of the Department Chair include: - promoting high-quality graduate and undergraduate experiences; - advocating for and supporting the scholarship of a multidisciplinary faculty; - providing leadership and infrastructure to support faculty research and external funding initiatives; - promoting a culturally aware and inclusive environment with a strong commitment to recruiting, mentoring, and retaining diverse faculty, staff, and students; - leading fundraising initiatives and promoting alumni development to meet current and future Department priorities; - continuing and strengthening strategic relationships with the community, benefactors, and industry; and - representing the Department to the University administration and serving as an advocate for the Department. Qualifications Applicants should have a PhD in Chemistry or a related field, have an accomplished research and teaching record, and be highly regarded and recognized by the scientific community. In addition, previous leadership experience in higher education is desirable. The Chemistry Department Chair position consists of 50% administrative and 50% academic duties. The successful candidate will have a reduced teaching load and will maintain a research program through externally funded projects, peer-reviewed publications, and the mentoring of graduate students.
