Job Title: Surgical Technician II Profession: Surgical
Technician II Specialty: FS Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Days Hours
per Shift: 10 hours Experience: 1 year of relevant experience in
level 1 trauma License: Current Basic Life Support issued by the
American Heart Association required upon hire Certifications:
Service line competency achievement Must-Have: Must have at least 1
year of level 1 trauma experience displayed on resume. Description:
Under general supervision, provides technical assistance to
operating room physicians and nurses during complex surgical
procedures. The Surgical Technician II will have a primary
designated service line and will possess expertise specific to that
service line. Utilizes physician preference cards to assist in
preparing the operating room for surgical procedures. Assists in
maintaining and updating preference cards. Maintains an adequate
supply of instruments and supplies to meet patient needs. Scrubs in
and sets up instruments and supplies prior to procedures. Prepares
the sterile field by obtaining, opening, and arranging instruments
and supplies anticipated for procedures. Assists in draping the
patient and operative area. Works with the nurse to open and
prepare the sterile field. Assists in the correct identification of
operative specimens for laboratory analysis. Remains attentive
during surgery, providing additional instruments, supplies, or
items as needed. Monitors the sterile field and recognizes and
corrects breaks in sterile technique. Delivers medications to the
surgeon as required. Participates in sponge, needle, and instrument
counts as directed by policy. Reports all drains, packs, implants,
etc., to the nurse and assists with the application of dressings.
Informs appropriate personnel of any potential problems regarding
patient or procedure. Takes emergency action as required. Assists
with post-operative processing of instruments and equipment. Cleans
operating room areas and disposes of sharps from the sterile field
according to policy. Participates in evaluating new products,
methods, or equipment to determine quality. Serves as a clinical
resource for physicians and staff in other departments. Conducts
daily discussions regarding service line needs, including equipment
issues and supply shortages. Acts as a liaison regarding
instruments and supplies. Collaborates with other departments and
vendors to learn about new equipment and ensure tools and supplies
remain updated. Assists in training Surgical Technicians. Assists
with patient transport as needed. Performs related work as
required. Physical Requirements: Must be able to climb, kneel, and
perform duties under stressful situations. May involve lifting and
carrying various objects. Requires considerable walking, standing,
pushing, and pulling. Requires the ability to stand for up to 6
hours per day. Requires excellent manual dexterity to handle
instruments and equipment. Requires sufficient visual acuity to
perform tasks. Occasional requirement to push/pull up to 100
pounds. Requires ability to move or position patients. Frequent
exposure to needles and other sharp objects. Frequent exposure to
blood, body fluids, and communicable diseases. Knowledge, Skills,
and Abilities: Knowledge of medical asepsis as it applies to the
operating room, including various instruments used for all types of
surgical procedures. Knowledge of proper operating room setup and
correct methods for handling instruments and supplies. Knowledge of
proper handling of tissue specimens, cultures, and smears, as well
as inventory methods. Skill in maintaining effective working
relationships with others. Skill in following technical written and
verbal instructions. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of
growth and development across the lifespan. Possesses the ability
to assess and interpret the appropriate information needed to
identify each patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific
needs. Must have sufficient computer skills to check and respond to
emails and edit preference cards. Education: Graduation from an
accredited school/program for Surgical Technicians is required.
